Sarah Ecolano is a generational fisher(wo)man and founder of Copper River Fish Market in remote Alaska. She grew up aboard her family’s boat, earning a full crew share by her mid-teens, and has sold wild Alaska seafood direct from the boat for 25+ years.

Sarah built CRFM around her catch, wanting the fish she handled with care at sea to reach customers with its quality and sense of place intact. As CRFM grew in reputation and volume she was able to apply what she’d learned to help other independent fishers also strengthen their small business.

Sarah is passionate about stronger food systems and opportunities for independent fishing businesses. Her work spans selling seafood, hosting events for buyers and harvesters, speaking at national events, and meeting policymakers to share firsthand insight into what fishers need.
Independent fishers have never been short on ability or ambition, they’ve simply lacked the pathways and resources to build stronger businesses.

Sarah’s gathering resources and support to change that. It’s the next evolution of work that began on her boat, grounded in the idea: a rising tide lifts all boats.
